The 2 Steps of Curb Appeal- Painting and Pressure Washing

If you are thinking about putting your home on the market to sale or just want to increase the value of your home the best and really most important thing that you can do as a homeowner is to Paint and Pressure wash your home. That is it. Just good old fashion elbow grease.

Painting

A-lot of people paint there own home and here are some tips for you from someone that has painted for years.

  1. Never paint in a hurry. If you do you will end up making a mess and you will have invested a-lot of time and money and end up with a crappy looking job. The whole ball of wax to a good paint job is prep work. And plenty of it. It should take on average twice as long to prep as to paint.
  2. Never buy cheap paint. If you are not spending around $ 40 bucks per gallon on a good acrylic latex  paint you are being cheap. and the paint job will only last 2 years vs 8-10 with good paint. The Handyman-Hotline only uses good paint.
  3. Primer is important. It makes the paint stick and not peel.
  4. Watch out for moisture in the surface you are painting. Moisture will cause paint to bubble and blister.
  5. Be very careful on ladders and respect them. If you are afraid of heights stay off ladders. If you are not used to ladders always be mindful of the ladder slipping. Always paint with two people at all times on high ladder work.
  6. Painting and Staining are different things. You paint one way you stain another.
  7. Do not buy cheap caulk. Also, when you try to run a bead, prick the nozzle of the caulk tube just on the tip. You do not want a bunch of caulking coming out to fast. Tilt your caulk gun on a 45 degree angle and keep a steady bead by one sweeping motion left to right.

Pressure Washing

A-lot of people pressure wash their own home and here are some tips for you from someone that has pressure washed for years.

  1. Always make sure the water is turned on to the pressure washer before you crank it. The rubber gaskets will overheat and stop building pressure if you run it with out water.
  2. Be very careful when applying bleach. You can ruin a -lot of stuff fast by not being careful with bleach. Also, bleach makes surfaces slippery. You need to really rinse off the area well.
  3. Contrary to popular belief, you DO NOT pressure wash vinyl siding. The way you clean vinyl siding is on low pressure. Use the green or white tip only.
  4. Tips: Black is for soaping. Then white, green, yellow then red. Red tips are only for cleaning driveways and brick foundations, patios, concrete.
  5. Never use a pressure washer to clean a roof. It will cause the roof to leak. Low pressure cleaning is the best way to clean roofs. The black stains you see on roofs is actually mold. You clean it with a chemical soak.

Leaking Basement
rating starrating starrating starrating starrating star

I had made several attempts to fix my wet basement. I spoke with many contractors and they were outrageous. They all told me I had to dig up my foundation and it would cost thousands of dollars. A friend of mine told me to call a handyman and see what they said. So I Did. Best call I ever made. They installed a french drain, replaced my gutters and installed Drylock to my cinder blocks. my basement hasn't leaked since. Very pleased.”
