Unseen Hazards of Plumbing Work
Unseen Hazards of Plumbing Work
As a handyman, we do a-lot of plumbing service work. While most jobs seem very easy and may go well there is always an unseen threat that can linger. I am talking about germs. It is no mystery that your homes plumbing system is very nasty and can breed a whole host of germs and bacteria. These nasty bugs can kill you. I recently had to go to the emergency room when I cut myself working on a plumbing job. I did not think anything about it at the time but after a couple of days a small bump popped up on my little finger. Just where I had cut myself.
After a couple of more days went by, my whole hand started to swell up and I went to the emergency room. I had contracted MRSA a nasty staph infection that can kill you. The worst thing about it, other than the pain and the doctor bills, is that staph and a whole host of germs are everywhere. All it takes is a little scrape or cut and this germ will enter into your body.
Now I am no expert on germs but I do know some basic precautions that you may take when working on your own plumbing.
5 Steps To Take When Working On Your Plumbing
- Slow down and take your time. Getting in a hurry will cause you to cut your self.
- Wear gloves and long sleeves shirt. Also, wear pants and even safety glasses. The ideal here is to cover your whole body.
- Disinfect area before you start working. A 3 dollar can of spray disinfectant will help kill germs that may be on the outside of plumbing fixtures and pipes.
- Have a well lighted work area.
- Wash hands and arms after you are done working.
While it is impossible to protect you from every possible germ or bug, following the above 5 steps will make you a little more safer.
